Is it relevant to post ‘blog updates’ on twitter? Yes definitly. Are we not abusing twitter? And again Yes. When RSS feeds enables readers to subscribes to updates, why spam Twitter with invisible links with invisible content, where RSS feeds atleast shows, if not the full post , a snippet.
You may trust your followers to provide you the right content in hidden URL. But a fatigue sets in , when you have too many links to open wondering what might be in it for. Now wordpress.com has come with Publicize. It allows users to post updates automatically , so that your followers will be updated as soon as it is posted. You can customize the tweet content as well.
This incessant updates would kill twitter, where people [ a small part of it] use it for conversations. Ideas born of it, problems get solved when people collaborate not exchange with links explaining the possible solution for the given problem.
This makes me wonder about how Google Wave might be and also feel happy about. If my guesses are correct they should design similar to Google reader share links with Content or Note or both. They also vote their likeness, Star them.
Lets not kill social media specially twitter when people were allowed to argue in 140chars not 60 minutes when experts blabber and audiences are only texting their opinion.
I remember the day when i almost jumped out of the chair, after i created site in geocities. Editing HTML was so easy it was like child play, except the annoying ad widget. Although i have two yahoo ids now, one which was created because my full name as yahoo id was available.
When i say Google the new yahoos, not in a negative way, but the number of services they offer are tantamount to what yahoo used to offer. Think of the gamut of services beyond Mail. Documents, Sites, Reader,Maps, etc. All these would have been in yahoo’s roadmap more or less.
Other companies like Microsoft and Zoho are offering similar services, but GMAIL is the pivotal product after search engine , which made users stick to it. Like your neighbourhood grocery store, where you would wait to get favourite Cheese even though its available at the next store at a discounted price. Its all with the familiarity.
Gmail shutdown has been sore point oflately, but not a major concern. I beginning to notice the offline feature for most of the Google services. Hip hip hurrah for that. Gmail, GDocs, GReader all have it with the support of Google Gears. Its a good and proactive to go beyond SaaS , but offering a desktop solution is Nah Nah for me and for most of you. But i would like to get my hands dirty, because i trust my neighbourhood store man. He always delivers.
Are you dealing with Mark All as Read problem in Google Reader? Yes i faced it too, but not anymore. It has become the thing of the past, thanks to my appetite for reading and little bit thinking.
The universe started with bloglines, yes still it a pretty awesome tool for reading blogs. But hey everyone moves on when they find pretty new girl.
Coming to the MAR problem, think of what you absolutely need , when you need and how much you need?. Be ruthless in subscribing to blogs, not for the heck of it.
- Unsubscribe blogs that are updated daily , most probably community blogs that are authored by many. And if you think you would miss a thing, dont worry , subscribe to an user who reads that blog. When he thinks someting good is available, he would share it.
- Unsubscribe blogs that dont offer full content. Whats the point in subscribing to their feed and still a click is required to their website. Remember these bloggers are so popular , still they prefer traffic hits to be increased.
- Never ever ever ever subscribe to feed bundles. I know you would love to know what Paul Krugman or Thomas Friedman reads, but the knowing business cant leap forward into reading.
- Organize the feed content by moving to relevant folders of your choice.Spend a day or less trending your subscriptions. Add/Delete/Organize. Its worth a penny.
Grow your subscription list based on your reading habbit. Let there be zero Unread Count in your reader rather thanbecoming a fan of http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mark-all-as-read-in-Google-Reader/44842519211?ref=mf
